Personal documents and formal paperwork may need both accurate text and a consistent representation of names, numbers, seals and annotations. The recipient may require a plain professional translation, certification or a procedure specific to its jurisdiction. We recommend sharing the complete source file and the receiving organisation’s requirements from the outset.
Japanese personal records may include a koseki (family register) or a jūminhyō (resident record). Their contents and legal purpose differ, so they should be described accurately rather than automatically labelled as a UK birth certificate or proof of a particular relationship. Please provide the complete relevant record, including municipal headings, annotations and any continuation pages, for document-specific review.
Where dates use a Japanese era year, or a name appears in kanji, kana and Roman letters, provide any spelling already used on a passport or previous official submission. This helps the translator identify discrepancies without silently altering the source. If the request concerns modules, grades or university documents, see academic transcript translation for that separate document type.
Language-specific considerations: Japanese records can combine kanji, hiragana, katakana, Roman letters and different date conventions. Proper names, address order, company forms and educational terminology require careful contextual checking to prevent misidentification or false equivalence.
Japanese translations may be requested for family registers, certificates, academic records, corporate documents, employment records, contracts and product information. The translation should reflect the original record accurately, including meaningful formatting, rather than changing legal or administrative classifications to appear more familiar in English.

Japanese authorities and institutions may prescribe translation format and signatory details for particular procedures. Confirm those rules before ordering a certified or formal version. The receiving authority is the best source for required translation declarations, signatures, paper copies and any other formalities.
Notarisation and apostille legalisation are different services and do not themselves certify the linguistic accuracy of the translated text. Read about notarised translations and apostille-related translations if overseas authentication is involved.
Turnaround options depend on the material, formatting, language combination and any additional certification needs. We can advise on those factors after reviewing your files.
